The following research tasks will be performed with the kind support of the EURIZON initiative:
Q1. To prove that the previously observed DNA fragmentation in living cells in the presence of T2C3Tx MXene is a general phenomenon which occurs with other MXenes (e.g. Nb MXene).
Q2. To investigate molecular mechanism of the observed effect of MXene genotoxicity. We hypothesize that the mechanism can involve oxidative stress and generation of active oxygen radicals.
Q3. To investigate interaction of MXenes with the cells of the immune system. We hypothesize that macrophages can recognize the MXenes as foreign particles and phagocyte them. We preliminary observed that the MXenes get accumulated on/in macrophages in cultures in-vitro.
Q4. To investigate the fate of the MXenes after being associated with macrophages and/or phagocytozed. We will also investigate if MXene could induce DNA fragmentation also in the immune cells.
